Independent Living Support Program

From support in childhood to independent life

For more than ten years, through Music of Hope we have walked alongside children and young people growing up in challenging circumstances as they learn, perform, build self-confidence and discover their potential.

But what happens when they grow up? What happens when school ends, when the everyday support of adults disappears, or when a young person is left alone to face major life decisions?

Some young people at that stage need only advice and encouragement. Others need far more. Some lose their parents, some are left without a safe home, or grow up in circumstances that do not offer enough stability to take the first steps towards independent life on their own. They often have talent, strength and potential, but not yet the experience, the support network or the life skills needed to carry the weight of adult life alone.

How does the program work?

The Independent Living Support Program helps young people at risk turn the security and potential they have built through Music of Hope into an independent life, responsibility and a contribution to their community.

A structured one-year development program brings together 5 key areas needed for independent living:

A safe home

Stable conditions for living, learning and growing.

Circle of support

Mentors, school, community and trusted adults.

Personal development plan

Education, employment, financial independence and life skills.

Independence Academy

10 modules covering the key areas of independent life.

Independence and leadership

Young people develop the ability to run their own lives and become active members of the community.

From support to independence. From independence to leadership.

The Independent Living Support Program grew out of our work with young people who, at exactly that moment, most need a secure foothold.

When life brings a heavy loss or a major change, the goal of the program is not only to provide temporary housing security and a safe place for a new beginning. The goal is to prevent one hard life circumstance from cutting short a young person’s development, so that they do not drop out of school, lose a chance at employment, lose the support of their community or give up on their plans for the future.

We believe that no life crisis should decide how far a young person can go. That is why we help young people at risk get through the hardest period, keep their development on track and gradually build a life they can lead on their own.

More than an apartment

At first glance, this may look like a housing program for young people at risk.

But the apartment is only the beginning. The real goal of the program is for a young person to learn to run their own life. With the support of mentors and their circle of support, participants learn how to run a household, plan a budget, find and keep a job, make decisions, build healthy relationships and take responsibility for their own future.

Through the Independence Academy, the program covers 10 interconnected areas of development, from financial literacy and employment to healthy relationships, leadership and planning life after the program ends.

Planning for the future

Why does this matter?

The greatest challenge for a young person is not just finding a job or a place to live. It is far harder to build the inner sense that they can make decisions, plan their future and shape their own life.

Many young people at risk grow up hearing what they cannot do. Our goal is for them to learn everything they can.

That is why the Independent Living Support Program builds responsibility, self-confidence and leadership alongside life skills. Step by step, young people learn how to take charge of their own lives instead of waiting for someone else to organise it for them.

Circle of support

No one becomes independent entirely on their own. That is why we build a circle of support with each participant: mentors, teachers, friends, members of the community and other trusted adults who can offer a foothold when it is needed.

We believe a sense of belonging matters just as much as a roof over one’s head.

Children from the Music of Hope program

From receiving support to supporting others

This may be the most important part of the program. We do not want young people to remain recipients of help. We want them to become people who believe in themselves and take responsibility. That is why participants gradually become a support to the younger children of Music of Hope through mentoring, volunteering and shared activities.

That is the moment when support grows into responsibility, and personal growth becomes a contribution to the community. When a young person realises that their experience can help someone else, independence grows into leadership.

Our vision

We believe every young person deserves the chance to build a stable, dignified and independent life.

We believe that independence does not mean having to do everything alone.

Independence means knowing how to make decisions, ask for help when it is needed and take responsibility for your own life.

Help make sure that no life crisis cuts short a young person’s development.
